Scholastica Arcana
(Basic) Scholastica Arcana – Novice |
|||||||||
When a citizen with psychic abilities is uncovered, they are tested thoroughly by the Inquisition. Most are executed as being too dangerous to control. Many of the remainder are taken to Terra to be either sacrificed before the Golden Throne or sent to join the Adeptus Astronomica. The few survivors are put into some other form of Imperial service, either with the Adeptus Astra Telepathica to become an astropath, or the Scholastica Arcana to become a sanctioned psyker. Sanctioned psykers are allowed to develop their powers under controlled circumstances. This regulation makes the use of psychic powers far safer, at the expense of the number and variety of abilities the psykers are capable of practicing. |

When Scholastica novices reach a certain point in their studies, they advance to the level of initiate. Although their powers are marginally more effective, they are still not fully trained and are still covered by only a provisional sanction to possess psychic powers. Inappropriate use of these powers results in the immediate voiding of the sanction, and therefore execution, so few initiates will dare cast powers outside of their Schola Arcanum. |

Finally granted full sanctioned psyker status, adepts of the Scholastica Arcana are ready to enter the Emperor’s service. There are few non-military applications for psychic powers (except for astro-telepathy, which is not the province of the Scholastica Arcana), so the vast majority of Scholastica graduates are assigned to the Imperial Guard. A few are retained for the Adeptus Arbites, who find sanctioned psykers to be important in the uncovering of Chaos conspiracies, and it is here that psykers may live near-normal lives, serving as proper Judges, rather than as a civilian attaché, as they do in the Guard. A tiny minority of sanctioned psykers will attract the attention of the Inquisition for the second time in their lives, and be recruited as Explicators. |

Some of the more promising Scholastica Arcana students are not released immediately, or voluntarily stay on to continue their studies. They come to master the psychic arts to a degree rarely seen amongst humans. It is these sanctioned psykers who are more likely to be the most successful as Inquisitors or Arbitrators. |
